The "Deep" French Manicure Is the Glam Nail Trend Taking Over This Spring

As far as nail art is concerned, we're in deep. And I don't just mean the sheer amount of mani options and trends floating around right now.

A recently-introduced-to-the-mainstream take on a classic, the "Deep French" manicure is having a major moment. Also called an Extreme French manicure, this look is characterized by a thick tip that has edges extending far down the sides of the nail. You likely saw it all over the red carpets this awards season, with stars like Kim Kardashian (who wore a version by nail artist Kim Truong to the Oscars) and Ariana Grande testing the waters.

Ahead, everything you need to know about the trend. As another fan of the look, Ally from A Star Is Born, once said, "we're far from the shallow now."

The Trend

"The Deep French manicure is a nail design that makes your fingertips appear long and slender," shares iconic nail artist Britney Tokyo, whose Deep French designs (among all others) are brought to manicurists all over the world as inspiration. "By deepening the smile line in the white part of the tip, the nail bed appears longer than usual."

According to Tokyo, the trend is popular because—besides the fact that it's both simple and fun—it makes your fingertips look slimmer and longer. There's also the fact that it's recently gained widespread understanding beyond the nail community.

"Deep French has been the mainstream in nail competitions for a long time, but until now there were not many nail artists with the skills," she shares. "However, as more people are getting into nail art, the skills of nail artists/manicurists have improved, and this type of design has become more popular."

How to Get the Look

While a version can be done on shorties, the Deep French manicure works best on long nails—you might have to pull out the extensions if you're going to fully commit. The shape, however, is entirely up to you; coffin, square, and almond are all popular options.

Perhaps the most important step, though? Choosing the color.

"The color of the nail bed should be one that hides the color of the nail tip," shares Tokyo. "For the French tip part, I recommend choosing a solid color rather than a sheer color." This way, your nails will still look beautiful even as they grow out.
